SUMMARY:BUSTED: Contemporary Sculpture Busts
DESCRIPTION:BUSTED: Contemporary Sculpture Busts\, showcases this ancient sculpture genre as radically transformed by 21st-century artists. Throughout history\, sculpted busts have served to commemorate and preserve the likeness of distinguished individuals\, and to celebrate divinity or nobility. In recent years the bust format has experienced a revival among contemporary artists\, as they’ve found it a compelling means to address issues tied to identity\, mortality\, power\, and history. Featuring work in diverse materials—from marble to fabric—and made by artists from various cultural backgrounds\, the exhibition invites viewers to reflect on vital questions in art history and human representation. Together these sculpture busts demonstrate the continued vitality of figural art as a means of addressing both timeless concerns and the most pressing issues of today.

SUMMARY:Public/Private
DESCRIPTION:Academy Art Museum \nSebastian Martorana (American\, b. 1981) creates masterful sculptural vignettes of public and private life out of the timeless medium of marble. Carving highly realistic yet unlikely textures such as those of an old mattress\, a teddy bear\, or the pages of a book out of stone\, Martorana comments on sociopolitical realities and the human condition in his work. The stoic\, classical appearance of marble connects his subjects to a social and artistic legacy that has been more hegemonic than welcoming for millennia\, and Martorana wittily questions this through his focus on intimate subjects: Kermit the Frog’s unwavering eye contact with the viewer is a playful reflection on childish attachment\, while a plush sheep evokes the human need for comfort. In his contrasting works depicting objects pertaining to public life\, such as marble benches that will activate the Museum’s courtyard during the exhibition\, Martorana explores the power and possibilities of community. \nMartorana received his BFA in illustration from Syracuse University\, where he also studied sculpture\, including a semester in Italy. After graduating he became a full-time apprentice in a stone shop outside Washington\, D.C. He received his MFA at the Maryland Institute College of Art’s Rinehart School of Sculpture. Martorana is currently an adjunct professor at the Maryland Institute College of Art. \nMartorana’s works have received numerous awards and are included in various private and public collections. His sculpture Impressions was featured in the exhibition “40 Under 40: Craft Futures\,” at the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian American Art Museum. The sculpture was acquired by the museum and is now part of their permanent collection.

SUMMARY:TRACE(s)
DESCRIPTION:The Kreeger Museum is pleased to present TRACE(s)\, an exhibition featuring regional artists Billy Friebele\, Roxanna Alger Geffen\, Rania Hassan\, Sebastian Martorana\, Katherine Tzu-Lan Mann\, Antonio McAfee\, Brandon Morse\, and Johab Silva. Guest curated by Sarah Tanguy\, the show explores how the past evokes shifting memories while suggesting new and present narratives. Rich in representation and abstraction\, TRACE(s) encompasses painting\, photography\, mixed media\, sculpture\, sound\, and video\, and includes several site-responsive installations. As the artists dialogue with their source materials\, they mine the many meanings of “trace” as noun and verb\, and engage the themes of displacement\, connectivity and transformation. Variously inspired by personal and cultural history\, the natural and built environments\, and the human condition\, they offer an impassioned take on the issues of the day and suggest possible futures to come.

SUMMARY:Subject Matters: Sebastian Martorana in Sculpture
DESCRIPTION:Icon: Sam the Eagle\, marble\, 19 x 12 x 12 in. \nContemporary artist Sebastian Martorana incisively carves stone sculptures which traverse a range of subjects. Working primarily in marble\, Martorana charges the oldest of artistic disciplines with the concerns of a contemporary generation. He has embraced a direct approach to sculpture.  Martorana often works from observation\, sculpting from life using tools fabricated to achieve the required effect over the surface of stone. Where elements of his work appear forthright and effortless\, they are in fact the result of a skillful approach to artistic traditions\, reveling in passages of texture\, pattern\, volume and form that are by turns humorous\, familiar and politically-charged. \nSubject Matters is organized by the Ogunquit Museum of American Art.  This concise survey of the past ten-years presents twenty-one sculptures drawn from both his studio and private collections. This will be the artist’s first solo museum exhibition in New England. \nThis exhibition is made possible through the generous support of Sparhawk Oceanfront Resort and Barbara and Richard O’Leary. \n

DESCRIPTION:HAND/MADE \nOpening Reception Friday\, February 6th\, 5:00 – 8:00pm \nMICA’s Decker Gallery\, Fox Building\, 1301 W Mount Royal Ave\, Baltimore\, Maryland 21217 \nIcon: Sam the Eagle\, marble\, 19 x 12 x 12 in. \nSebastian’s recent work\, Icon: Sam the Eagle\, will be on display with the tools and models used for it’s creation. \nMICA’s Exhibition Development Seminar (EDS) students present HAND / MADE\, an art show juxtaposing an original 19th-century marble sculpture by artist and former MICA student William Henry Rinehart with 3-D\, performance and video works by contemporary sculptors and interdisciplinary artists. Exhibited in MICA’s Fox Building: Decker Gallery (1303 W. Mount Royal Ave.) from Friday\, Jan. 30-Sunday\, March 15\, HAND / MADE makes vital connections between traditional methods employed by artists working with 19th-century studio artisan teams and collaborative practices in contemporary studios. A reception will take place Friday\, Feb. 6\, 5-8 p.m. \n“HAND / MADE explores how sculptures are seldom the result of a simple transaction between a single artist\, an idea and a given medium\,” said EDS co-curator and class spokesperson Adenike Adelekan ’15 (art history\, theory\, and criticism). “The methods and practices that are sometimes used when creating a sculpture can involve multiple people beyond the artist. This can cause tension regarding the complex issue of authorship. Our exhibition aims to investigate this on-going discussion.” \nThe EDS class will show work from six contemporary artists\, all with ties to MICA\, of which five have been commissioned for new work. Fiber faculty member Annet Couwenberg\,Nancy Daly ’11 (Photographic & Electronic Media)\, Director of the Rinehart School of Sculpture Maren Hassinger\, Richard Vosseller ’95 (general fine arts) and Megan Van Wagoner ’00 (Mount Royal School of Art) are creating works that respond to Rinehart’s most reproduced sculpture\, Sleeping Children. Each artist has been asked to reflect on the relationship between individual creative expression and artistic collaboration-and what it means when others’ labor is required to realize an artwork. MICA’s own Sleeping Childrenwill be displayed alongside the commissioned pieces\, allowing the audience to draw connections from the past to the present. Also on display will be contemporary marble work by Sebastian Martorana ’08 (Rinehart School of Sculpture)\, with his tools and maquettes (or scale models) to help viewers visualize the traditional carving process. \n
