I know this is kinda silly but—like many makers, I have made liberal use of the traditional “craft-person” emoji: ⚒

However, specifically as a stone carver/mason, it never really felt right. I have been at this for many years and never one have I simultaneously held a hand-hammer and mash-hammer or pick-axe (depending on your keyboard) . . . . where’s the #chisel?!

So I thought it was time to make my own. The American Craft Council Baltimore Show provided the perfect opportunity to roll out my custom design. I made a little make-and-take activity where participants got to try their hand at gold leafing small squares with my custom graphic etched into its face. While explaining the image to participants was able to refer to the exact hammer and chisel which were displayed nearby.

I really wish there there was a type-able version if it, but I’ve no idea how to do that. In the mean time I have uploaded the design hyperlinked here as a:

Feel free to download any or all of them. Use and share as you like. While spreading the digital version around might not start the revolution, I figure passing out a few hundred at the nation’s largest craft show was a good start.

While it is often considered a final and permanent mark, perhaps if one wants to initiate change, the first step is to set it in stone.
